Abstract (English): Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of endodontic solvent on ability to dissolve gutta-percha and resin cones and sealers; antimicrobial action on biofilm in situ; effect on dentin microhardness; capacity to remove filling material from canal and effect of ultrasonic agitation of solvent after retreatment. Methods: (A) Specimens of Acroseal, Sealer 26, MTA Fillapex, RealSeal SE, AH Plus and Endofill and gutta-percha cones Dentsply (DP), ProTaper (PT) and Resilon were prepared and immersed into solvent at three different times. (B) Dentin blocks infected intraorally were exposed to solvents for 5 min, then; blocks with biofilms were stained and evaluated using Live/Dead. (C) Dentin blocks were prepared, exposed to solvents for 2.5 and 15 minutes and submitted to microhardness test (Knoop). (D) Teeth were prepared, filled and retreatment using solvents. Then, all teeth were filled again with solvent and ultrasound activation for 1 min was executed. Micro-CT images before, after retreatment and after ultrasound activation were performed. Results: Xylol and Endosolv E, at 15 min, exhibited ability to dissolve AH Plus and Endofill. Also, at 15 min, Endosolv E was the solvent that more dissolved DP cone. Xylol and Eucalyptol exhibited best antimicrobial action while Citrol the worst. All solvents promoted changes in dentin microhardness. Ultrasound activation increased the elimination of residual filling. Conclusion: Endosolv E showed more ability to dissolve AH Plus and Endofill and DP cones. Xylol and Eucalyptol exhibited best antimicrobial action. All solvent promoted changes in dentin microhardness. Ultrasound activation improved the residual filling removal; however, not completely remove it. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
Abstract (Portuguese): Objetivos: Esse estudo investigou a eficácia dos solventes endodônticos na capacidade de dissolução de cones de guta-percha ou resinosos e cimentos; atividade antimicrobiana no biofilme in situ; microdureza dentinária; capacidade de remoção do material obturador e o efeito da agitação ultrassônica do solvente após retratamento. Métodos: (A) Espécimes dos cimentos Acroseal, Sealer 26, MTA Fillapex, RealSeal SE, AH Plus e Endofill e cones de guta-percha Dentsply (DP), ProTaper (PT) e Resilon foram preparados e imersos nos solventes em três diferentes tempos. (B) Blocos de dentina foram infectados, expostos aos solventes por 5min e avaliados por Live/Dead. (C) Blocos de dentina foram preparados, expostos aos solventes por 2, 5 e 15 min e submetidos ao teste de microdureza (Knoop). (D) Dentes foram preparados, obturados e retratados; em seguida, preenchidos com solventes e ativados com ultrassom por 1 min. Imagens de Micro-CT foram feitas antes, após o retratamento e após a ativação ultrassônica. Resultados: Xilol e Endosolv E, aos 15min, apresentaram maior capacidade de dissolver AH Plus e Endofill. Além disso, aos 15 min, apenas o Endosolv E foi capaz de dissolver o cone DP. Xilol e o Eucaliptol exibiram a melhor ação antimicrobiana, enquanto o Citrol teve a pior. Todos os solventes promoveram alterações na microdureza dentinária. A ativação ultrassônica aumentou a eliminação do remanescente obturador. Conclusão: Endosolv E mostrou maior capacidade de dissolver AH Plus, Endofill e cones DP. Xilol e o Eucaliptol exibiram a melhor ação antimicrobiana.
