Abstract (English): The presence of orthodontic appliances makes the oral hygiene process difficult, leading to the accumulation of biofilm. It is possible to observe that many of these patients develop frequent gingival recession (GR), which has a multifactorial etiology. Therefore, we seek to study this correlation in more detail, and whether there is a direct association. This study aimed to evaluate whether there is a correlation between gingival recessions and fixed orthodontic retention (COF). This is an integrative literature review, in which searches for articles in English were carried out for an twenty years period, through the PubMed and EBSCOhost databases, using the descriptors "gingival recession" and "orthodontic retainers" combined. each other. 133 articles were found, of which 8 were used following the exclusion and inclusion criteria. It was noted that some authors believe that the etiology of GR is multifactorial and orthodontic treatment alone does not cause it. However, other researchers believe that there is a direct correlation between the two. Therefore, it can be concluded that containment does not seem to be a direct cause, but the consequences of its use can generate recession. However, the evidence on the study is contradictory, and more studies on this topic are needed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
Abstract (Portuguese): A presença de aparelho ortodôntico dificulta o processo de higienização bucal, propiciando o acúmulo de biofilme. É possível observar que muitos desses pacientes desenvolvem quadros frequentes de recessão gengival (RG), sendo esta de etiologia multifatorial. Dessa forma, busca-se estudar essa correlação mais detalhadamente, e se há uma associação direta. Esse trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar se há uma correlação das recessões gengivais e contenção ortodôntica fixa (COF). Trata-se de uma revisão de literatura do tipo integrativa, na qual foram realizadas buscas por artigos em inglês por um período de vinte anos, através das bases de dados PubMed e EBSCOhost, utilizando os descritores "gingival recession" e "orthodontic retainers" combinados entre si. Foram encontrados 133 artigos, dos quais 8 foram utilizados seguindo os critérios de exclusão e inclusão. Notou-se que, alguns autores acreditam que a etiologia da RG é multifatorial e o tratamento ortodôntico por si só não a causa. Porém, outros pesquisadores acreditam que existe uma correlação direta entre as duas. Dessa forma, pode-se concluir que a contenção não parece ser uma causa direta, mas as consequências do seu uso podem gerar a recessão, entretanto, as evidências sobre o estudo são contraditórias, sendo necessários mais estudos acerca dessa temática.
