Abstract (English): In mammals, pregnancy is a process that involves normal physiological adaptations in mother's body that allows the growth of a new individual. It is well known for proper organ development and growth of the fetus it must be an equilibrium between maternal and environmental factors. However, in the last decades has been observed that pregnant women exposed to unfavorable environments, such as undernutrition, may bring adverse effects not only to mother's health but also can induce a hostile intrauterine environment, which may conduct to the development of chronic-degenerative diseases, since birth even in the adulthood. This is why the developmental programming concept (DOHaD: Developmental Origins of Health and Disease), has focused on explaining the relationship between exposure to environmental and social factors during fetal life and the development of several pathologies after birth. This review aims to offer a general overview of how an individual may be susceptible to metabolic diseases due to the various environmental factors that the mother could be exposed to during vulnerable stages of life, and how is that the high-fat diets consumption during pregnancy can be detrimental to the progeny, emphasizing the importance of care during pregnancy in terms of physical, psychosocial and nutritional aspects, all this with the only purpose of awareness to the general population about the importance that pregnant women have a healthy environment.
