Abstract (English): Introduction: The irruption of social media in our era has led to significant changes in the way people communicate, organise themselves and stay informed. Despite their potential benefits, within the study of social media, these platforms can also generate adverse effects, particularly with regard to the mental health of the youth population. Objective: To analyse the usage patterns and habits of young people in Extremadura on the Instagram platform, with the aim of understanding its impact on psychological well-being and mental health. Methodology: A quantitative, preliminary, exploratory and descriptive study. The questionnaire was used as an instrument of analysis, compiling a total of 103 responses from young people aged between 12 and 30 years. Results: It stands out that young people in Extremadura are not fully informed about the risks that social media can present, which limits their ability to recognise and deal with symptoms and negative consequences on mental health. Conclusion: It is vital to promote comprehensive digital education aimed at children, adolescents and young adults that encourages the adoption of healthy online practices and habits.
