| Abstract (English): | The Mexican Institute for Social Security (IMSS) has recently celebrated 8 decades of existence; its contribution to the processes of medical care, public health and epidemiological surveillance in Mexico have been among its cornerstones. This article presents some selected points of the history of the Institute’s epidemiological surveillance, from its birth in the organic structure to the successes of identifying agents and responding to outbreaks, epidemics and pandemics that have been milestones in the modern history of our country, such as diseases preventable by vaccination, pathologies affecting the respiratory tract, as well as the gastrointestinal tract, vector-borne and sexually transmitted diseases that have been subject to sectoral epidemiological surveillance, not only in terms of epidemiological surveillance, but also as contributions of research. Finally, it is a brief recapitulation to know and understand the events that the Institute have experienced, i. e., where we come from, what has been achieved in order to understand where we are and what can be built and done in the future. | Abstract (Spanish): | Recientemente el Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social (IMSS) ha cumplido 8 decenios de vida; entre sus piedras angulares ha estado su contribución a los procesos de atención médica, salud pública y la vigilancia epidemiológica de México. En el presente artículo se exponen algunos puntos seleccionados de la historia de la vigilancia epidemiológica del Instituto, desde su nacimiento en la estructura orgánica hasta éxitos de identificación de agentes y de la atención a brotes, epidemias y pandemias que han sido hitos en la historia moderna de nuestro país, tales como enfermedades prevenibles por vacunación, patologías de afectación de las vías respiratorias, así como del aparato gastrointestinal, enfermedades transmitidas por vector y de transmisión sexual que han sido sujetas a vigilancia epidemiológica sectorial, no solo en materia de vigilancia epidemiológica, sino también en las aportaciones en materia de investigación. Finalmente, es una breve recapitulación para conocer y comprender los acontecimientos que el Instituto ha vivido, es decir, de dónde venimos, lo que se ha logrado con el fin de que entendamos dónde estamos y lo que se podrá construir y hacer en el futuro.
