| Abstract (English): | Accuracy in bibliographic references is a fundamental aspect of scientific communication, particularly in the health sciences, where knowledge traceability carries clinical, ethical, and educational implications. This article analyzes the limitations of the Vancouver style in its editorial implementation and argues for the standardization of the NLM format as a common technical framework. Through a critical review of the literature, it identifies frequent problems resulting from the multiplicity of citation styles, such as referencing errors, ambiguity in editorial policies, and deficiencies in academic training on citation practices. Empirical studies are presented that highlight the low accuracy of references generated by reference managers without supervision, as well as the inconsistency of citation criteria among biomedical journal editors. The article proposes specific institutional actions, including incorporating reference quality into thesis evaluation rubrics, formalizing the librarian’s role in the editorial review process, and developing unified citation guidelines. It also emphasizes the need for an educational approach that goes beyond mechanical style application and fosters a critical understanding of citation as an ethical and strategic practice. The article concludes that the adoption of the NLM format, supported by specialized training and institutional policies, would enhance transparency, efficiency, and reliability in biomedical scientific publishing. | Abstract (Spanish): | La precisión en las referencias bibliográficas constituye un componente clave de la comunicación científica, particularmente en el ámbito de la salud, donde la trazabilidad del conocimiento tiene implicaciones clínicas, éticas y formativas. Este artículo analiza las limitaciones del estilo Vancouver en su implementación editorial y argumenta la necesidad de avanzar hacia la estandarización del formato NLM como marco técnico común. A partir de una revisión crítica de la literatura, se identifican problemas frecuentes derivados de la multiplicidad de estilos bibliográficos, tales como errores en la citación, ambigüedad en las políticas editoriales y deficiencias en la formación académica sobre citación. Se presentan estudios empíricos que evidencian la baja precisión de las referencias generadas por gestores bibliográficos sin supervisión, así como la variabilidad de criterios entre editores biomédicos. Como parte de las propuestas, se sugiere integrar criterios normativos específicos en las rúbricas de evaluación de tesis, fortalecer el rol del bibliotecario en la revisión de referencias y establecer lineamientos institucionales unificados. Asimismo, se plantea la necesidad de un enfoque educativo que trascienda la aplicación mecánica de estilos y promueva una comprensión crítica de la citación como práctica ética y estratégica. Se concluye que la adopción del formato NLM, acompañado de formación especializada y políticas institucionales claras, permitiría fortalecer la transparencia, eficiencia y confiabilidad de la literatura científica biomédica.
