Abstract (English): INTRODUCTION: Gutta-percha is a universally used material in endodontics and is currently considered irreplaceable. Its effectiveness stems from its ability to provide optimal sealing properties when combined with a sealer, along with a range of desirable physical, chemical, and biological characteristics. OBJECTIVE: This critical analysis aims to synthesize the literature on the properties of gutta-percha, which, despite its widespread use, are sometimes not well understood. In light of its common application, it is essential for clinicians to thoroughly understand gutta-percha's properties to fully leverage its advantages. RESULTS: Factors such as storage conditions, exposure to light, air, and heat can significantly alter its physical and chemical properties. Therefore, it is crucial that gutta-percha is stored under refrigeration and protected from light and air from the moment of manufacture. Another important consideration is the adherence of manufacturers to standardization norms regarding caliber, surface regularity, and shape. Current non-compliance with these standards can lead to various complications during the root canal filling process. Additionally, it is imperative that any gutta-percha point intended for use in a root canal be disinfected beforehand to prevent bacterial contamination, whether from the manufacturer or due to previous use in another root canal. CONCLUSION: Finally, it is important to remember that the primary indication for gutta-percha is to fill the endodontic space, and to prevent its use outside the root canal. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
Abstract (Portuguese): INTRODUÇÃO: A guta-percha é um material universalmente usado em Endodontia, e ainda considerado insubstituível. Sua eficácia decorre da capacidade de proporcionar preenchimento de espaço na cavidade pulpar e selamento quando combinada com um cimento, juntamente com uma série de características físicas, químicas e biológicas desejáveis. OBJETIVO: O presente artigo de análise crítica investigou, por meio de uma revisão da literatura, as propriedades da guta-percha que, apesar de seu uso generalizado, deve ser mais bem compreendida. Em vista de sua aplicação comum, torna-se essencial que os clínicos entendam completamente as propriedades da guta-percha para aproveitar plenamente suas vantagens. RESULTADOS: Fatores como condições de armazenamento, exposição à luz, ao ar e ao calor podem alterar significativamente suas propriedades físicas e químicas. Portanto, é fundamental que a guta-percha seja armazenada sob refrigeração e protegida da luz e do ar desde o momento da fabricação. Outra consideração importante é a conformidade dos fabricantes às normas de padronização com relação ao calibre, à regularidade da superfície e ao formato. A não conformidade com esses padrões pode levar a várias complicações durante o processo de obturação do canal radicular. Além disso, é imperativo que qualquer cone de guta-percha destinado ao uso em um canal radicular seja desinfetado previamente, para evitar a contaminação bacteriana, seja do fabricante ou durante o manejo clínico. CONCLUSÃO: Por fim, é importante lembrar que a indicação principal da guta-percha é preencher o espaço endodôntico, devendo ser evitado seu uso fora do canal radicular. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
