Abstract (English): Chronic pain has been recognized for some years as a disease that affects one in four of the adult population in Spain and is a frequent cause of disability and healthcare. This scenario leads to considering it as a major public health problem that requires special attention. Several studies have shown that chronic pain affects women more than men, with these differences initially attributed to biological, genetic, anatomical, and hormonal factors. However, although still under-researched, we find in the most recent scientific literature studies that highlight other social and cultural factors more closely related to gender, which may contribute to the differences found. Understanding how the biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors involved in the presence and characteristics of pain influence and interact is a necessary task that can allow us to better understand and assess the differences between men and women and help us guide strategies for managing pain, reducing its consequences and improving the quality of life of patients. Throughout this article, we will attempt to provide some data based on the frequency and consequences of chronic pain that support the need to consider the sex/gender perspective in its evaluation and treatment. Abstract (Spanish): El dolor crónico está reconocido desde hace algunos años como una enfermedad que afecta a una cuarta parte de la población adulta en España y es causa frecuente de discapacidad y atención sanitaria. Este escenario hace que se posicione como un importante problema de salud pública que requiere especial atención. Diversos estudios han mostrado que el dolor crónico afecta más a las mujeres que a los hombres, atribuyéndose esta diferencia inicialmente a factores biológicos, genéticos, anatómicos y hormonales. Sin embargo, y aunque aún poco tratado, en la literatura científica más reciente hay estudios que ponen en valor otros factores sociales y culturales más relacionados con el género, que pueden contribuir a las diferencias encontradas. Conocer de manera conjunta cómo influyen e interactúan los factores biológicos, psicológicos y socioculturales implicados en la presencia y las características del dolor es una tarea necesaria que puede permitir comprender y valorar mejor las diferencias entre hombres y mujeres, y ayudar a orientar las estrategias para gestionar el dolor, disminuyendo sus consecuencias y mejorando la calidad de vida de los enfermos. A lo largo de este artículo trataremos de aportar algunos datos basados en la frecuencia y las consecuencias del dolor crónico, que avalan la necesidad de considerar en su evaluación y tratamiento la perspectiva de sexo/género.
