Abstract (English): The article analyzes the situation of hospital beds in Chile, both in the public and private sectors, and their productivity from 1978 to 2023. It highlights a decrease in the availability of public beds, which has fallen from 34,314 in 1979 to 26,220 in 2023, while private beds have increased. The study also reveals that the Occupancy Index (OI) of public hospital beds has remained low, indicating a critical shortage in areas necessary to address waiting lists. Alternatives to improve the situation are discussed, including the need for better management and the incorporation of more accurate data in the discussion about the productivity of the health sector. Abstract (Spanish): El presente artículo muestra la situación de las camas hospitalaria en Chile, públicas y privadas, con un breve análisis de su funcionamiento centrado en particular en su productividad. Se hace un recuento histórico de la disponibilidad de camas públicas y privadas desde el año 1978 al 2023. Las cifras utilizadas provienen en su mayoría de registros del MINSAL y en algunos casos se consideraron otras fuentes como la agrupación Clínicas de Chile. El estudio del funcionamiento de las camas hospitalarias se hace en función del Índice Ocupacional (IO) de dos años seleccionados. Los resultados más relevantes muestran la escasez de camas hospitalarias según parámetros internacionales (OCDE). Se muestra además la conversión de camas hospitalarias, en particular del sector público. El estudio de la productividad de las camas hospitalarias muestra que esta escasez es más crítica en aquellas que a nuestro juicio son las más necesarias para resolver la lista de espera. Se discuten algunas alternativas para abordar esta situación. Se resalta la necesidad de incorporar este elemento en la discusión acerca de la productividad del sector público y de la necesidad de mejorar la calidad de la información disponible a nivel oficial.
