| Abstract (English): | Dementias are responsible for a significant proportion of the population's disease burden. The characteristic cognitive decline poses ethical challenges in their care that must be addressed prudently. The most relevant effect is the progressive loss of autonomy, raising questions about how best to proceed, from the moment of communicating the diagnosis to obtaining informed consent for therapy, while balancing respect for their dignity and the beneficence sought. This article discusses the ethical dilemmas affecting people with dementia's daily lives and civic participation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
| Abstract (Spanish): | Las demencias son responsables de una proporción importante de la carga de enfermedad que afecta a la población. El deterioro cognitivo característico plantea desafíos éticos en sus cuidados que deben ser abordados prudencialmente. El efecto más relevante es la pérdida progresiva de la autonomía, planteando dudas respecto a cómo mejor proceder desde el momento de comunicar el diagnóstico, hasta la obtención del consentimiento informado para su terapia, conciliando el respeto por su dignidad y la beneficencia a la que se aspira. Este artículo discute estos dilemas éticos, incluyendo aquellos que afectan la vida cotidiana y la participación ciudadana de las personas con demencia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
