OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of a physical exercise routine practiced during the workday on serum glucose and lipid concentrations in workers at a public hospital. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Longitudinal, prospective study conducted on workers at a tertiary hospital. The sample was convenience-based. Participants performed daily 30-minute exercise sessions, 5 days a week, for 12 weeks. Blood samples were taken at the beginning and end of the intervention to quantify fasting glucose, HbA1c, total cholesterol, LDL, HDL, and triglycerides. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and the Wilcoxon signed-rank test for related samples. RESULTS: Twenty-three women and six men with a mean age of 47.4 ± 6.7 years and a mean BMI of 31.13 ± 3.73 kg/m², with limits of 24.45 and 40.52 kg/m², were studied. A significant decrease was observed in fasting glucose concentrations, HbA1c, and triglycerides. LDL cholesterol decreased slightly without statistical significance, while HDL decreased slightly. CONCLUSIONS: Physical exercise during the workday significantly improved glycemic and triglyceride markers in hospital staff, even without dietary changes. The high participation of women highlights the need for gender-sensitive approaches. The results support the inclusion of structured physical exercise programs in occupational health policies as a preventive measure and to promote well-being. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |

OBJETIVO: Evaluar el efecto de una rutina de ejercicio físico, practicada durante la jornada laboral, en las concentraciones séricas de glucosa y lípidos en trabajadores de un hospital público. MATERIALES Y MÉTODOS: Estudio longitudinal y prospectivo efectuado en trabajadores de un hospital de tercer nivel. La muestra fue por conveniencia. Los participantes efectuaron sesiones diarias de ejercicio de 30 minutos, 5 días a la semana, durante 12 semanas. Se tomaron muestras sanguíneas al inicio y al final de la intervención para cuantificar la glucosa en ayuno, HbA1c, colesterol total, LDL, HDL y triglicéridos. Los datos se analizaron mediante estadística descriptiva y prueba de rangos con signo de Wilcoxon para muestras relacionadas. RESULTADOS: Se estudiaron 23 mujeres y 6 hombres con edad media de 47.4 ± 6.7 años e IMC promedio de 31.13 ± 3.73 kg/m², con límites de 24.45 y 40.52 kg/m². Se observó una disminución significativa en las concentraciones de glucosa en ayuno, HbA1c y triglicéridos. El colesterol LDL tuvo una disminución leve sin significación estadística, mientras que el HDL disminuyó ligeramente. CONCLUSIONES: El ejercicio físico durante la jornada laboral mejoró de manera importante los marcadores glucémicos y de triglicéridos en el personal hospitalario, incluso sin cambios dietéticos. La alta participación de las mujeres resalta la necesidad de enfoques con perspectiva de género. Los resultados respaldan la inclusión de programas de ejercicio físico estructurado en políticas de salud ocupacional como medida preventiva y promotora del bienestar. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
