| Abstract (English): | OBJECTIVE: To establish the association between maternal and perinatal morbidity and Peruvian or Venezuelan nationality among patients treated at the Sergio E. Bernales National Hospital in Lima, Peru. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was an observational, analytical, cross-sectional study. Inclusion criteria: patients' medical records between 18 and 34 years of age in the postpartum period with single births, treated in 2023. Exclusion criteria: patients with multiple pregnancies and incomplete medical records. The calculated sample size was 347 (95% CI, 5% precision, and expected proportion of 50%), with stratification of cases by nationality (92% Peruvian and 8% Venezuelan), and random selection of records from each stratum. The variables analysed were patient morbidity during pregnancy, birth and the postpartum period, and perinatal morbidity. Pearson's χ2 test and Fisher's exact test were applied as appropriate, with a p-value of less than 0.05 being considered significant. RESULTS: A total of 290 medical records were reviewed (270 from Peruvian patients and 20 from Venezuelan patients). 40% of Venezuelan pregnant women had received inadequate prenatal care, compared to 24.8% of Peruvian women. HIV infection (20%) and mild anaemia (13.7%) were prevalent among Peruvian women, while mild anaemia (20%) was prevalent among Venezuelan women. Abdominal delivery was performed on 70% of Venezuelan women and 60.7% of Peruvian women. Postpartum anaemia affected 60% of Peruvian women and 40% of Venezuelan women. An association was found between Venezuelan nationality and ABO/Rh incompatibility (p = 0.008), which was not related to other maternal or perinatal morbidities. | Abstract (Spanish): | OBJETIVO: Establecer la asociación entre la morbilidad materna y perinatal con la nacionalidad peruana o venezolana en pacientes atendidas en el Hospital Nacional Sergio E. Bernales de Lima, Perú. MATERIALES Y MÉTODOS: Estudio observacional, analítico y de corte transversal. Criterios de inclusión: historias clínicas de pacientes entre 18 y 34 años, en el puerperio, con nacimientos únicos atendidos en el 2023. Criterios de exclusión: pacientes con embarazos múltiples e historias clínicas incompletas. Se calculó un tamaño de muestra de 347 registros (IC95%, precisión del 5% y proporción esperada del 50%), con estratificación de los casos por nacionalidad (92% peruanas y 8% venezolanas) y selección aleatoria de los registros de cada estrato. Variables analizadas: morbilidad de las pacientes durante el embarazo, nacimiento y puerperio; y morbilidad perinatal. Se aplicaron las pruebas de χ² de Pearson y exacta de Fisher según correspondiera; se consideró significativo el valor de p < 0.05. RESULTADOS: Se revisaron 290 historias clínicas (270 de pacientes peruanas y 20 de venezolanas) 8 de 20 embarazadas venezolanas tuvieron controles prenatales insuficientes, en comparación con 24.8% de las peruanas. En las venezolanas destacaron la infección por VIH y la anemia leve (20%), mientras que en las peruanas predominó la anemia leve (13.7%). La vía de nacimiento fue abdominal en el 70% de las venezolanas y en el 60.7% de las peruanas. La anemia posparto afectó al 60% de las peruanas y al 40% de las venezolanas. Se encontró asociación entre nacionalidad venezolana e incompatibilidad ABO/Rh (p = 0.008), sin relación con otras morbilidades maternas o perinatales.
