Abstract (English): Background: Cancer is one of the leading causes of mortality in both Mexico and the world, and its incidence continues to rise. Therefore, maintaining up-to-date records of cancer diagnoses at both local and national levels is essential. Objective: To analyze malignant neoplasm diagnoses issued by the Pathology Department of a tertiary care hospital in the eastern region of Mexico. Material and methods: Observational, descriptive study. Cancer diagnoses registered in the Pathology Department of the Hospital de Especialidades, Centro Médico Nacional “General de División Manuel Ávila Camacho,” in Puebla, Mexico, were analyzed for the period 2018–2024. Results: Since 2018, a higher number of cases have been observed in women, accounting for 60–64% of total diagnoses. In 2024, the most frequent cancers in the general population were breast, prostate, and skin cancer. Among women, the most common were breast, thyroid/parathyroid, and skin cancers, while in men, prostate, kidney, and skin cancers predominated. A significant increase in diagnoses was recorded in 2024, particularly for breast, thyroid/ parathyroid, colorectal, ovarian, kidney, and lung cancer in women, and for prostate, kidney, colorectal, bladder, and thyroid/parathyroid cancer in men. Conclusions: Access to regional cancer diagnosis data in Mexico is essential for establishing effective strategies for cancer control, early detection, and timely treatment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
Abstract (Spanish): Introducción: el cáncer constituye una de las principales causas de mortalidad en México y en el mundo, y su incidencia continúa en aumento. Por ello, es fundamental contar con registros actualizados de los diagnósticos oncológicos a nivel local y nacional. Objetivo: analizar los diagnósticos de neoplasias malignas emitidos por el servicio de Anatomía Patológica de un hospital de tercer nivel en la región oriente de México. Material y métodos: estudio observacional y descriptivo. Se analizaron los diagnósticos de cáncer registrados en el servicio de Anatomía Patológica del Hospital de Especialidades, Centro Médico Nacional “General de División Manuel Ávila Camacho”, en Puebla, México, durante el periodo 2018-2024. Resultados: desde 2018, se ha observado un mayor número de casos en mujeres, quienes representaron entre el 60 y 64% del total de diagnósticos. En 2024, los tipos de cáncer más frecuentes en la población general fueron los de mama, próstata y piel. En mujeres, los más comunes fueron los de mama, tiroides/paratiroides y piel; mientras que en hombres predominaron los de próstata, riñón y piel. En 2024 se registró un aumento significativo en los diagnósticos de cáncer de mama, tiroides/paratiroides, colon y recto, ovario, riñón y pulmón en mujeres, y de próstata, riñón, colon y recto, vejiga y tiroides/paratiroides en hombres. Conclusiones: contar con información sobre los diagnósticos oncológicos a nivel regional en México es fundamental para establecer estrategias de control, detección oportuna y tratamiento adecuado del cáncer.
