| Abstract (English): | Introduction: The anatomical aspects of third molars require important attention in the diagnostic protocol and treatment plan due to their varying complexity in size and shape. Objective: To determine the anatomical aspects of the third molars by means of a topographic study, considering the shape and number of roots according to the maxillary process studied. Method: Four hundred third molars were evaluated in 100 cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans of patients 16 years of age or older, belonging to both sexes, with the presence of four retained or erupted third molars, with complete root development. The characteristics studied were the number and shape of the roots. The Ríes Centeno and Sánchez Torres classification was used for data collection. Results: It was found that the male sex predominated over the female sex, with a higher frequency of fused roots in the upper jaw. In the lower jaw there was a greater frequency of straight roots according to their shape, and according to the number, two roots predominated. Conclusions: The morphology of the third molars seen in CBCT provides complete visibility of anatomical aspects such as the number of roots and their internal configuration, which allows individualizing the treatment indistinctly to the sex and age of the individual.
