Abstract (English): Childhood overweight and obesity are one of the most important public health problems of the 21st century worldwide, and Mexico ranks among the top positions. This problem is linked to a decrease in quality of life and life expectancy due to the consequences that range from mild to severe, affecting the physical and emotional integrity of those who suffer from it, since it has been reported in several studies that the presence of overweight and obesity is a risk factor for presenting emotional distress. The objective was to synthesize the scientific literature on the relationship between overweight and obesity with emotional disturbances and eating disorders in schoolchildren. Therefore, a search for articles in English and Spanish was conducted in 3 databases: PubMed, SciELO, and Google Scholar. The following keywords were included: "stress," "anxiety," "depression," "childhood obesity," "body mass index," "risky eating behaviors," "eating disorders," "children and adolescents." A total of 35 studies were included, which were divided into 2 lines of research: emotional disturbances and eating disorders. A relationship was found between overweight and obesity with stress, anxiety, and depression, as well as weight concern, which leads to body image dissatisfaction and contributes to the development of eating disorders.
