Abstract (English): Protein undernutrition during the perinatal period produces morphological alterations in the hippocampus and cognitive decline in adult rats. In the present study, we assessed the time spent and the number of errors made in a maze by 365-day-old male Wistar rats born to dams fed ad libitum or subjected to a 50% food restriction during pregnancy. At birth, all dams were fed ad libitum; however, the offspring of malnourished dams were assigned to larger litters in order to maintain the nutritional deprivation during lactation. Hematoxylin and Eosin staining was used to evaluate the thickness and length of different hippocampal regions. No significant treatment effects were observed in either behavioral or histological measures. However, in the CA1 region, a trend toward increased thickness was noted in treated rats. Abstract (Spanish): La subnutrición proteínica en el período perinatal produce alteraciones en la morfología del hipocampo y deterioro de las habilidades cognitivas en ratas adultas. En el presente trabajo se estimó el tiempo y errores cometidos en un laberinto por ratas Wistar, macho de 365 días de edad, que nacieron de madres nutridas con una dieta ad libitum o subnutridas con una restricción del 50% del alimento ad libitum durante la gestación. Al nacimiento todas las madres pasaron a comer ad libitum, pero a los nacidos de madres tratadas con subnutrición en la gestación, lactaron en camadas más grandes para que el tratamiento de penuria alimenticia se mantenga durante la lactación. Mediante tinción con hematoxilina y eosina se evaluó el espesor y longitud de distintas regiones hipocampales sin ver efectos significativos por el tratamiento en las mediciones comportamentales ni histológicas; sin embargo, en la región CA1 hay una tendencia a aumentar el espesor de esta región en ratas tratadas. Abstract (Portuguese): A subnutrição proteica no período perinatal produz alterações na morfologia do hipocampo e prejuízos nas habilidades cognitivas em ratos adultos. No presente estudo, foram estimados o tempo e os erros cometidos em um labirinto por ratos Wistar machos, com 365 dias de idade, nascidos de mães alimentadas com dieta ad libitum ou submetidas a subnutrição por meio de uma restrição de 50% do alimento ad libitum durante a gestação. Após o nascimento, todas as mães passaram a receber alimentação ad libitum; contudo, os filhotes provenientes de mães submetidas à subnutrição gestacional foram amamentados em ninhadas maiores, de modo a manter a condição de penúria nutricional durante a lactação. Por meio de coloração com hematoxilina e eosina, foram avaliados a espessura e o comprimento de diferentes regiões hipocampais, não sendo observados efeitos significativos do tratamento nas medidas comportamentais ou histológicas.
