| Abstract (English): | This article commemorates the 140th anniversary of the first documented antiseptic laparotomy in Chile, a decisive moment that marked the beginning of modern surgery in the country. Surgical progress in the 19th century was achieved through the gradual control of bleeding, pain, and infection. In Chile, this transformation was driven by physicians trained in Europe, particularly Dr. Manuel Barros Borgoño, who introduced Lister’s antisepsis at San Juan de Dios Hospital. The performance of the first laparotomy for intestinal obstruction became a turning point in national surgical practice. This work revisits a key date in Chilean medical history and pays tribute to the pioneers of scientific surgery. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
[ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
