Abstract (English): The monumental sculptural work "Cuauhtémoc en la defensa de México-Tenochtitlan", executed by Luis Ortiz Monasterio in 1964, stands as an historical testament of relevance within the context of the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS). Strategically located at the Oaxtepec Vacation Center of the IMSS, the piece encapsulates the transcendence of art and history in promoting social welfare and national identity. This article aims to review the sculptural contributions of Ortiz Monasterio, a central figure of the Mexican School of Sculpture whose legacy extends across several monumental works. Specifically, we detail the technical characteristics and history behind the Oaxtepec sculpture. This work is notable for being a direct carving on-site, a method that enhances its monumental vocation and connection to the land, emulating the majesty and solidity of pre-Hispanic Mexican sculpture. The central theme of the relief narrates the stoic and heroic defense of the Tlatoani Cuauhtémoc, who, alongside the Mexica people, demonstrated unbreakable courage in defending their city even in the face of imminent defeat. This monument to the value of a united people and their capacity for sacrifice strongly resonates with the ideals of cohesion and social protection that underpin the IMSS. Ultimately, the sculpture functions as a permanent reminder that Social Security encompasses not only physical health but also the cultural enrichment and historical cohesion of its beneficiaries.
