| Abstract (English): | Objective: To describe the interceptive treatment performed in two mixed-dentition patients with functional anterior open bite, using two different approaches: a hook-type lingual crib combined with rapid maxillary expansion, and bonded tongue spurs combined with a 4×2 appliance. Case report: Two female patients aged 7 and 8 years, respectively, were diagnosed with anterior open bite, atypical swallowing with type II tongue interposition, and anterior tongue thrust. The patient in Case 1 also presented a 5-mm transverse maxillary deficiency and was treated with a hook-type lingual crib soldered to a Hyrax expander, followed by an active expansion phase and a passive retention period. In Case 2, with a 4-mm transverse maxillary discrepancy, tongue spurs were bonded to the palatal surfaces of the maxillary incisors and combined with a 4×2 appliance and a sequence of stainless-steel archwires (.012" to .018"). Both treatments incorporated myofunctional therapy focused on tongue repositioning during swallowing, phoneme articulation training, and muscular strengthening. Total treatment time was approximately eight months, with progressive improvement of the overbite observed from the third month onward in both cases. Conclusion: Both interceptive approaches the hook-type lingual crib and the bonded tongue spurs proved effective in correcting anterior open bite in mixed dentition, achieving adequate control of tongue interposition and clinically significant improvement of the overbite. Rapid maxillary expansion was beneficial in the case presenting a transverse discrepancy, whereas the 4×2 appliance optimized alignment in the second case. | Abstract (Spanish): | Objetivo: Describir el tratamiento interceptivo realizado en dos pacientes en dentición mixta con mordida abierta funcional, utilizando dos abordajes distintos: rejilla lingual tipo garfio asociada a expansión rápida maxilar y espolones linguales combinados con mecánica 4x2. Reporte de Caso: Dos pacientes de 7 y 8 años de sexo femenino, diagnosticadas con mordida abierta anterior, deglución atípica con interposición lingual tipo II y empuje anterior. La paciente del Caso 1 mostró además un déficit transversal maxilar de 5 mm y fue tratada con una rejilla lingual tipo garfio soldada a un expansor tipo Hyrax, seguida de un periodo de expansión activa y contención pasiva. En el Caso 2, se observó un déficit transversal de 4 mm, se instalaron espolones en las caras palatinas de incisivos superiores, complementados con mecánica 4x2 y una secuencia de arcos de acero (.012" a .018"). Ambos tratamientos incluyeron terapia miofuncional dirigida a reposición lingual, articulación de fonemas y fortalecimiento muscular. La duración aproximada del tratamiento fue de 8 meses y en ambos casos se evidenció mejoría progresiva del overbite a partir del tercer mes. Conclusiones: Los dos abordajes interceptivos utilizados, rejilla lingual tipo garfio y espolones linguales, demostraron ser efectivos para corregir la mordida abierta anterior en dentición mixta, logrando un control adecuado de la interposición lingual y una mejoría clínica del overbite. La expansión rápida maxilar resultó beneficiosa en el caso con discrepancia transversal, mientras que la mecánica 4x2 permitió optimizar la alineación en el segundo caso.
