| Abstract (English): | The Abexol® active ingredient (AI) is a mixture of six high molecular weight primary aliphatic alcohols, isolated and purified from beeswax Apis mellifera, with gastroprotective, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. Abexol®-tablet (50 mg) has been commercialized in Cuba and other countries for more than twenty years with great acceptance by the population that consumes it. A new formulation of this AI in suspension form was recently registered. The present study aims to compare the pharmacological efficacy of Abexol® suspension with respect to AI and the tablet in the pylorus ligated-induced gastric ulcer in rats' model. Animals were randomized into nine experimental groups: one negative control, one positive control, one Omeprazole- reference substance (10 mg/kg), and six treated with Abexol-AI, tablet and suspension, at 25 and 200 mg/kg doses, respectively. All treatments significantly reduced index gastric ulcers respect to positive control. Statistical comparison between similar doses of Abexol® treatments only showed significant differences between the tablet and the suspension at the highest dose tested (200 mg/kg) with respect to the ulcer index. Omeprazole significantly reduced the volume and acidity of gastric juice, but none of the Abexol®-treatments did. In conclusion, the greatest efficacy (96% inhibition) exerted to prevent gastric injury, induced by pylorus ligation in rats, was achieved by the suspension of Abexol® compared to similar doses of Abexol® IA and tablet. | Abstract (Spanish): | El ingrediente activo (IA) Abexol® es una mezcla de seis alcoholes alifáticos primarios de alto peso molecular, aislada y purificada de la cera de Apis mellifera con efectos gastroprotectores, antiinflamatorios y antioxidantes. El Abexol®-tableta (50 mg) se comercializa en Cuba y otros países desde hace más de veinte años con gran aceptación por parte de la población que la consume. Recientemente se registró una nueva formulación de este IA en forma de suspensión. El presente estudio tiene como objetivo comparar la eficacia farmacológica de la suspensión de Abexol® respecto al IA y la tableta en el modelo de úlcera gástrica inducida por ligadura del píloro en ratas. Los animales se aleatorizaron en nueve grupos experimentales: un control negativo, un control positivo, uno con Omeprazol-sustancia de referencia (10 mg/kg), y seis tratados con Abexol-IA, tableta y suspensión, a las dosis de 25 y 200 mg/kg, respectivamente. Todos los tratamientos redujeron significativamente el índice de úlceras gástricas con respecto al control positivo. La comparación estadística entre dosis similares de los tratamientos con Abexol® solo arrojó diferencias significativas entre la tableta y la suspensión a la dosis mayor ensayada (200 mg/kg) con respecto al índice de úlceras. El Omeprazol redujo significativamente el volumen y acidez del jugo gástrico, no así ninguno de los tratamientos con Abexol®. En conclusión, la mayor eficacia (96% de inhibición) ejercida para prevenir la lesión gástrica, inducida por ligadura de píloro en ratas, la alcanzó la suspensión de Abexol® respecto a similares dosis de Abexol®- IA y tableta.
