| Abstract (English): | Objective. To analyze the evolution of out-of-pocket health expenditures in Mexico between 2000 and 2022, with an emphasis on the determinants of household age composition and income levels. Materials and methods. Data from the National Survey of Household Income and Expenditures are used to assess historical trends and the distribution of expenditures. Comparative analyses are conducted based on income deciles, the presence of older adults and federal entity. Results. The analysis identifies the following key findings: 1) At least half of the country’s households reported out of pocket health spending between 2000 and 2022; 2) Historically, households with older adults have spent more, with a widening gap since 2012 that further expanded with the Covid-19 pandemic; 3) Low-income households with older adults allocate a larger share of their resources to health, and 4) The reduction in health spending observed between 2008 and 2018 primarily benefited higher-income households. Conclusion. Out of pocket health expenditures continue to represent a significant burden for lower-income households and those with older adults. These disparities highlight the need for public policies aimed at reducing inequities in health spending. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
| Abstract (Spanish): | Objetivo. Analizar la evolución del gasto de bolsillo en el periodo 2000-2022, con énfasis en los determinantes de edad e ingresos de los hogares. Material y métodos. Se emplean datos de la Encuesta Nacional de Ingreso y Gasto en los Hogares para evaluar tendencias históricas y la distribución del gasto. Se analizan los niveles de gasto según deciles de ingreso, presencia de adultos mayores y entidad federativa. Resultados. El análisis identifica los siguientes hallazgos: 1) Al menos la mitad de los hogares del país reportan tener gasto de bolsillo en salud; 2) Históricamente, los hogares con adultos mayores gastan más, con una brecha creciente desde 2012, que se amplió con la pandemia de Covid-19; 3) Los hogares de menores ingresos y con adultos mayores asignan una proporción mayor de sus recursos a la salud, y 4) La reducción del gasto entre 2008 y 2018 benefició principalmente a los hogares de mayores ingresos. Conclusión. El gasto de bolsillo en salud representa una carga significativa para los hogares de menores ingresos y aquellos con adultos mayores. Estas diferencias refuerzan la necesidad de políticas públicas orientadas a reducir la inequidad en el gasto en salud. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
