| Abstract (English): | Introduction: Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) significantly impacts the ageing population. Having been detected decades ago, there are now new health strategies that can optimise its control in this group. Community pharmacists must be trained in this approach in order to improve their pharmaceutical intervention and contribute to better health outcomes. Material and methods: Non-systematic review of literature in English and/or Spanish, open access, published between 1 January 2023 and 31 December 2024 in PubMed and Google Scholar. The aim is to contribute to the training of community pharmacists on this disease and its impact on the ageing population, considering preventive and therapeutic tools for its control. Titles, keywords and abstracts were analysed before accessing the articles. Consensus documents and relevant bibliographic references were also reviewed. Results: 63 articles and one consensus document on community pharmacist involvement in the RSV approach were identified. Conclusions: This narrative review synthesizes the available evidence on the burden of RSV in older adults and the potential role of community pharmacies in addressing it. It identifies a clear need for detection, referral, and prevention strategies from the pharmacy setting, as well as the integration of community pharmacists into public health programs. This work constitutes a useful starting point for future systematic reviews and applied research. Continuing education for pharmacists is reinforced as a key element for the effective implementation of Pharmaceutical Care Services. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
| Abstract (Spanish): | Introducción: El virus respiratorio sincitial (VRS) tiene un impacto significativo en población adulta mayor. Detectado hace décadas, hoy en día existen nuevas estrategias sanitarias que pueden optimizar su control en este grupo. El farmacéutico comunitario debe estar formado en este abordaje para mejorar su intervención farmacéutica y contribuir a mejores resultados en salud. Material y métodos: revisión no sistemática de literatura en inglés y/o español, de acceso libre, publicada entre el 1 de enero de 2023 y el 31 de diciembre de 2024 en PubMed y Google Scholar. Se pretende contribuir a la formación del farmacéutico comunitario sobre esta enfermedad y su impacto en adultos mayores, considerando herramientas preventivas y terapéuticas para su control. Se analizaron títulos, palabras clave y resúmenes antes de acceder a los artículos. También se revisaron documentos de consenso y referencias bibliográficas relevantes. Resultados: se identificaron 63 artículos y un documento de consenso sobre la participación del farmacéutico comunitario en el abordaje del VRS. Conclusiones: esta revisión narrativa sintetiza la evidencia disponible sobre la carga del VRS en adultos mayores y el papel potencial de la Farmacia Comunitaria en su abordaje. Se identifica una necesidad clara de estrategias de detección, derivación y prevención desde el ámbito farmacéutico, así como la integración del farmacéutico comunitario en los programas de salud pública. El presente trabajo constituye un punto de partida útil para futuras revisiones sistemáticas e investigaciones aplicadas. La formación continua del farmacéutico comunitario se refuerza como un elemento clave para la implantación efectiva de Servicios Profesionales Farmacéuticos Asistenciales (SPFA) en este ámbito.
