| Abstract (English): | Chrononutrition, a branch of clinical chronobiology, studies the relationship between mealtimes and circadian rhythms, and their effects on energy metabolism. Chrononutrition suggests establishing fixed mealtimes, as these have a synchronizing effect on circadian rhythms in general and those of the digestive system in particular. This has been observed in the expression of clock genes in the gut and liver, which are rhythmically expressed in association with digestive processes. Some hormones associated with digestion, such as insulin and adipokines, also vary their circulating levels in response to feeding/fasting cycles, which occur in a pattern dependent on the time of meal. There is a direct relationship between the circadian system and digestive functions; therefore, any circadian disruption caused by inadequate timing signals can lead to impaired nutrient absorption and digestive system dysfunction. It is important to mention that many studies have focused on "what to eat" or "how much to eat" to prevent the development of metabolic diseases; however, few address "when to eat," which has also proven to be fundamental. In this article, we explore some basic principles for understanding Chrononutrition and establish eating at the same time every day at regular intervals as a healthy practice for maintaining a healthy metabolic state. It is suggested that the timing of meals can be as important as the type of food. Finally, Chrononutrition involves three important aspects: 1) the amount of energy contained in meals, 2) the frequency or number of meals per day, and 3) the time of day when food is consumed. | Abstract (Spanish): | La crononutrición es parte de la cronobiología clínica, estudia la relación entre los horarios de alimentación y los ritmos circadianos, así como sus efectos sobre el metabolismo energético. La crononutrición sugiere la organización de horarios fijos de alimentación, ya que tienen un efecto de sincronización sobre los ritmos circadianos en general y del sistema digestivo en particular; esto último se ha podido observar en la expresión de genes reloj en el intestino y en el hígado, los cuales se expresan de manera rítmica asociados con los procesos digestivos. Algunas hormonas asociadas con la digestión, como la insulina y adipocinas, también varían sus niveles circulantes en respuesta ciclos de alimentación/ayuno, que ocurren con un patrón dependiente de la hora de alimentación. Existe una relación directa entre el sistema circadiano y las funciones digestivas; por lo tanto, cualquier alteración circadiana generada por señales temporales inadecuadas pueden provocar alteraciones en la absorción de nutrientes, y provocar mal funcionamiento del sistema digestivo. Es de importancia mencionar que muchos estudios se han centrado en "qué comer" o "cuánto comer" para prevenir el desarrollo de enfermedades metabólicas; sin embargo, pocos se preocupan en el "cuándo comer" que también se ha demostrado es fundamental. En este escrito se abordan algunas bases para entender la crononutrición, y establecer como una conducta adecuada, el comer a la misma hora todos los días a intervalos regulares, para mantener un estado metabólico saludable. Se sugiere que la hora de alimentación, puede ser tan importante como el tipo de alimento y, finalmente, la crononutrición involucra tres aspectos importantes: 1) cantidad de energía contenida en las comidas, 2) frecuencia o número de comidas por día y 3) la hora o momento del día de la ingesta de alimentos.
