Alternate Title: Response to the Letter to the Editor: "The Endothelium as an Organ: Between Functional Metaphor and Anatomical Reality".
Authors: González-Villalva, Adriana E.1

Abstract (English): The article focuses on the debate about whether the endothelium should be considered an organ or a specialized tissue. According to the classical definitions of an organ, which require the presence of two or more types of tissues with specific functions, the endothelium is a single layer of epithelial cells and does not strictly meet these criteria. However, various contemporary authors consider it an organ due to its ubiquity, multiple integrative functions, and its systemic role in vascular regulation, inflammation, and thrombosis. It is proposed that, although from an anatomical point of view it is a tissue, its functional importance justifies a conceptual reconsideration to facilitate its comprehensive study in physiology and pathophysiology.
