Abstract (English): Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder defined by a qualitative impairment in social interaction and communication, along with restricted interests and stereotyped behaviors. Various neurobiological, genetic, and epigenetic bases are recognized. Thirty percent of autistic individuals are severely or nonverbally autistic. The failure of autistic individuals to socialize is related to their impairment in social cogni tion, linked to deficits in empathy and theory of mind. Recently, this "inability to relate to peers" has been framed as a two-way problem between the autistic per son and the "typical" person, hence the concept of the "double empathy problem." This implies that not only is the autistic person dysfunctional in social interaction, but so is the non-autistic interlocutor. The problem of dual empathy allows for a new un derstanding of autism and, to some extent, puts into perspective the challenges faced by autistic and non-autistic individuals as part of a shared deficit, not solely attributable to the autistic person. While it facilitates awareness of neurodiversity and challenges us all in relation to autism, solid explanations are still lacking to accept this concept as valid in the genesis of the social problems faced by autistic individu als and its application in clinical practice and education. This article analyzes aspects of empathy and the problem of double empathy, highlighting their charac teristics and limitations for the interpretation of autism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
Abstract (Spanish): El autismo es un trastorno del neurodesarrollo defini do por una alteración cualitativa en la interacción social y la comunicación, sumado a intereses restringidos y conductas estereotipadas. Diversas bases neurobiológi cas, genéticas y epigenéticas son reconocidas. Un 30 % de los casos de autistas son graves o no verbales. El fracaso en la socialización de las personas autis tas está relacionado a su compromiso en la cognición social vinculado con déficit en la empatía y en la teoría de la mente. Recientemente esta "incapacidad para relacionarse con sus pares", se ha planteado como un problema de doble vía entre la persona autista y la "típica", de ahí el concepto del "problema de la doble empatía". Esto implica, que no solo la persona autista está dis funcionando para interactuar socialmente, sino también el interlocutor no autista. El problema de la doble empatía permite una nueva concepción en la comprensión del autismo y en alguna medida pone en perspectiva la problemática del autista y de los no autistas como parte del constructo de déficit compartido, no solo atribuible al autista. Si bien facilita la concientización respecto del recono cimiento de la neurodiversidad y nos interpela a todos en relación al autismo, aún faltan explicaciones sólidas para aceptar este concepto como válido en la génesis del problema social del autista y su aplicación en la práctica clínica y la educación. En este artículo se analizan aspectos de la empatía y el problema de la doble empatía, puntualizando sus caracte rísticas y limitaciones para la interpretación del autismo. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
