Abstract (English): The following essay discusses the obstacles faced by the food industry in Latin America, specifically in Colombia and Mexico, in implementing regulatory measures to combat overweight and obesity (OBO). It highlights how the food industry has generated inaccurate information and hindered population-based measures to address this public health problem. OBO is a complex and multifactorial disease with serious health implications, including metabolic problems and various types of cancer. At the population level, factors such as lack of physical activity and the consumption of ultra-processed foods are identified as key determinants of OBO. By 2021, obesity was responsible for a significant number of deaths from non-communicable diseases in the Americas. In Colombia and Mexico, the prevalence of OBO has increased considerably in recent decades, affecting different age groups, including children and adolescents. Although regulatory measures have been established regarding the consumption of these foods, resistance from the food industry, citing negative economic and commercial effects, has led to delays in the implementation of these regulations. It is essential to generate evidence and counter the disinformation promoted by the food industry to enable the implementation of effective public policies and the critical role of civil society and academia in addressing the challenges posed by the food industry in the fight against OBO, which is a growing problem in the Americas region, especially in countries like Colombia and Mexico. Abstract (Spanish): El siguiente ensayo menciona las barreras que la industria alimentaria en América Latina, específicamente en Colombia y México, implementa para evitar medidas regulatorias destinadas a combatir el sobrepeso y la obesidad (SOB). Se señala cómo la industria alimentaria ha generado información inexacta y obstaculizado acciones poblacionales para enfrentar este problema de salud pública. El SOB es una enfermedad compleja y multifactorial, con graves implicaciones para la salud, incluyendo problemas metabólicos y varios tipos de cáncer. A nivel poblacional, factores como la falta de actividad física y el consumo de alimentos ultraprocesados son identificados como determinantes clave del SOB. Para 2021, la obesidad fue responsable de un número significativo de muertes por enfermedades no transmisibles en las Américas. En Colombia y México, las prevalencias de SOB han aumentado considerablemente en las últimas décadas, afectando a diferentes grupos de edad, incluidos niños y adolescentes. A pesar de que se han establecido medidas regulatorias en cuanto al consumo de estos alimentos, existe resistencia de la industria alimentaria, argumentando efectos económicos y comerciales negativos, lo cual ha generado retrasos en la implementación de dichas regulaciones. Es imprescindible generar evidencia científica y contrarrestar la desinformación promovida por la industria alimentaria, de tal manera que se permita la ejecución de políticas públicas efectivas. Además, se requiere el papel crítico de la sociedad civil y la academia para enfrentar los desafíos planteados por la industria alimentaria en la lucha contra el SOB, que es un problema creciente en la región de las Américas, en especial en países como Colombia y México.
