Abstract (English): Psychotropic drugs are substances that act on the central nervous system, and they have been widely used in the treatment of psychiatric conditions. The study aims to analyze the importance of pharmacovigilance in psychotropic drugs monitoring, highlighting the challenges inherent to this process and how they can affect patient safety during pharmacotherapy. This is a literature review, carried out through the analysis of publications from the period between 2010 and 2024, available in the SciELO, LILACS and Google Scholar databases. The high number of adverse reactions reports resulting from psychotropic drugs, as well as prescription mistakes and errors during the prescriptions processing by pharmacists, impair the effectiveness in the treatment and patient safety. It is necessary to combat the underreporting of psychotropic drugs, encourage continued study by professionals and monitor the available data in order that more studies can be published and shared.
