| Abstract (English): | Introduction. Sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) refers to a group of conditions characterized by episodes of partial or total obstruction of the upper airway during sleep, which impairs normal ventilation and oxygenation in the patient. The most common clinical manifestations include snoring, restless sleep, mouth breathing, daytime sleepiness, and neurobehavioral disturbances. Rapid maxillary expansion (RME) is an orthopedic procedure used in pediatric dentistry to correct transverse maxillary constriction by separating the midpalatal suture through controlled mechanical forces. Objective. To evaluate the impact of snoring, restless sleep, and mouth breathing symptoms in pediatric patients with SDB treated with RME using a Hyrax appliance over a six-month period. Methodology. An observational, longitudinal, prospective study was conducted in male and female patients aged 6 to 11 years diagnosed with SDB. All patients received RME using a Hyrax appliance. Respiratory symptoms were assessed before and after treatment using the Mexican Questionnaire for the Detection of Sleep-Disordered Breathing in the Pediatric Population. Results. Before to treatment, 100% of patients presented snoring, along with a high prevalence of restless sleep and mouth breathing. After six months of treatment, a significant clinical (60%) in snoring was observed, along with a consistent improvement in the other evaluated symptoms. Conclusions. RME using a Hyrax appliance is associated with significant clinical improvement in symptoms related to SDB in pediatric patients and represents a noninvasive interceptive therapeutic alternative. | Abstract (Spanish): | Introducción.
