Abstract (English): Pediatric epilepsy is associated with a high prevalence of neurodevelopmental disorders and psychiatric comorbidities, significantly impacting cognitive and behavioral functioning as well as quality of life. These conditions may coexist independently or in an interrelated manner, as observed in developmental and epileptic encephalopathies, where both epileptic activity and the underlying etiology contribute to neurological impairment. Early, comprehensive, and multidimensional assessment is essential for timely detection, using standardized screening and diagnostic tools. The clinical approach should include a detailed medical history, physical examination, neuropsychological assessment, complementary studies, and genetic testing in selected cases. Management requires an individualized approach that considers the type of epilepsy, associated comorbidities, and the cognitive and behavioral effects of antiseizure medications. In addition, multidisciplinary interventions and strategies aimed at improving quality of life are essential, particularly in patients with multimorbidity. Early identification and timely intervention have a positive impact on functional outcomes, academic performance, and social integration. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
Abstract (Spanish): La epilepsia en edad pediátrica se asocia con una alta prevalencia de trastornos del neurodesarrollo y comorbilidades psiquiátricas, afectando de manera significativa el funcionamiento cognitivo, conductual y la calidad de vida. Estas alteraciones pueden coexistir de forma independiente o interrelacionada, como en las encefalopatías epilépticas y del desarrollo, donde tanto la actividad epiléptica como la causa subyacente contribuyen al deterioro neurológico. La evaluación temprana, integral y multidimensional es fundamental para la detección oportuna, utilizando herramientas estandarizadas de tamizaje y confirmación diagnóstica. El abordaje debe incluir historia clínica detallada, exploración física, evaluación neuropsicológica, estudios de gabinete y análisis genético en casos seleccionados. El tratamiento requiere un enfoque individualizado que considere el tipo de epilepsia, las comorbilidades y los efectos cognitivos y conductuales de los fármacos. Además, intervenciones multidisciplinarias y estrategias orientadas a mejorar la calidad de vida son esenciales, especialmente en pacientes con multimorbilidad.
