| Abstract (English): | The year 2026 marks the 90th anniversary of the establishment of Social Service as an academic requirement for students enrolled in the MD program at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). Over the past nine decades, Social Service has become one of the clearest expressions of the University’s commitment to society by linking professional education with the provision of services that address priority social needs. This anniversary provides an opportunity to review the historical background of its establishment, as well as the evolution of the "Dr. Gustavo Baz Prada" Social Service Award, created to recognize the contributions of those who carry out this activity. The Office of the Secretary of the Technical Council of the UNAM Faculty of Medicine preserves documentary records that make it possible to trace the history of this award and analyze its evolution over time, reflecting changes in the concept, scope, and impact of university social service. | Abstract (Spanish): | En 2026 se cumplen 90 años de la instauración del servicio social (SS) como requisito académico para el estudiantado de la licenciatura de Médico Cirujano de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México. A lo largo de estas nueve décadas, el SS se ha consolidado como una de las muestras más significativas del compromiso universitario con la sociedad, al vincular la formación profesional con la atención de necesidades sociales prioritarias. Esta conmemoración significa una oportunidad para revisar los antecedentes históricos de su creación, así como la evolución del Premio al Servicio Social "Dr. Gustavo Baz Prada", establecido para reconocer la labor de quienes realizan esta actividad. La Secretaría del Consejo Técnico de la Facultad de Medicina de la UNAM resguarda información documental que permite apreciar la trayectoria de este reconocimiento y analizar la evolución que ha experimentado a lo largo del tiempo, reflejando los cambios en la concepción, alcance e impactos del SS universitario.
