| Abstract (English): | There are many historical aspects related to the spine spinal cord lesions. We shall mention here only two historical data. About 5000 years ago, circa XVII century b.C. the Edwin Smith Papyrus was written. It contains exclusively clinical cases, not recipes, and was organized about injuries starting from head and proceeding downward through the body. The veredict about the forty eight described cases is classified in three ways: a) favorable b) uncertain c) unfavorable; meaning the last one no to treat. It has a particular interest for neurosurgery because contains the first descriptions of brain, meninges, brain surface and pulsation, cerebrospinal fluid and cranial sutures. Spinal osteoporosis described in Eclesiastés is a basic historical information. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
| Abstract (Spanish): | Los aspectos históricos de la patología vertebromedular son variados y múltiples. Destacaremos dos piedras angulares de este tema, los traumas espinales referidos en el Papiro de Edwin Smith y la osteoporosis espinal en el Edesiastés. El papiro de Edwin Smith representa la primera evidencia de referencias de vocablos como cerebro, meninges, líquido cefalorraquídeo, pulsación cerebral, circunvalaciones cerebrales y suturas craneales. Cita el papiro 48 casos traumáticos que se describen en forma sistemática de cráneo hacia abajo señalando signos y síntomas por primera vez como la afasia, hemiplejía, priapismo e incontinencia urinaria. Cumple cerca de 5000 años (Siglo XVII aC) y tiene indicaciones en los casos descritos en tres modalidades: acción de tratamiento, intentos terapéuticos y abstención categórica de tratar, mucho antes que los intensivistas decidieran cuando un paciente puede beneficiarse de cuidados intensivos y cuando no.
