Abstract (English): Introduction. Mandible fractures are a common site of fracture in the facial skeleton. Data regarding incidence and demography are consistent but treatment results are variable. There are several specialties in charge of the treatment of mandible fractures. Studies that evaluate the effectiveness to provide treatment of each one of these, are not sufficient. Methods. The medical records of 50 patients operated for mandible fractures, at Central Military Hospital, Mexico City, over 4- year period, between January 2003 and December 2006 were reviewed. Demographic data and incidence of mandible fractures were obtained. Comparative analysis between the specialties of plastic surgery, maxilofacial surgery and otorrinolaryngology were made for the variables of: number of days of hospital stay, complications and analgesic time requirements. Results. Seventy-five mandible fractures were found within the 50 patients reviewed. 90% of the patients were male, 10% left were female. The majority of them were in the group of age between the 21 and 30 years. The main cause of injury was found to be automobile accidents. The most common site of fracture was the parasymphisiary region in 40% of the cases; 68% of the patients had more than one fracture in the mandible. 22% of the patients had non-mandibular face fractures. Most of the patients received treatment by the specialty of otorrinolaryngology (54%), followed by maxilofacial surgery (32%) and plastic surgery (14%). 48% of the patients required the evaluation of other specialties for the treatment of the associated trauma. We found statistically significant differences as far as the days of hospital stay, when the specialties of plastic surgery and maxilofacial surgery were compared with ORL. We did not find any significant difference as far as the analgesic requirements and complications. Mortality in our study was of 0%. Conclusions. Data found regarding demography and incidence in our study is similar to the reported ones in the rest of litera ture. In spite of a significant greater number of patients treated by the specialty of otorrinolaryngology, the results are similar to the ones obtained by the specialties of plastic surgery and the maxilofacial surgery. Abstract (Spanish): Introducción.
