| Abstract (English): | Introduction: Despite past contributions to health sciences, epidemiology has not extensively developed particular theories to help provide, as has been requested, the scientific bases for the public health practice. However, when environmental epidemiology studies and intervenes environmental and health problems, it has needed the rethinking of its discipline tasks, along with its sense and perspectives. Objectives: This paper arises from the practice of environmental epidemiology and seeks to justify how the practice of epidemiology can contribute to develop disciplinary thinking. Conclusions: Issues to be developed in epidemiology are: focus on exposures, interdisciplinary work, investigation of systemic roots of problems and their consequences, integration of community points of view in research, connection of health problems to related economic and policy processes, and make visible the inequity problems. | Abstract (Spanish): | Introducción: A pesar de las contribuciones hechas a las ciencias de la salud, la epidemiología no ha desarrollado de manera extensa un cuerpo teórico que le ayude a proporcionar, como se la ha pedido, el fundamento científico para el desarrollo de la salud pública. No obstante, al estudiar e intervenir los problemas de ambiente y salud, la epidemiología ambiental ha necesitado pensar el quehacer disciplinar, su sentido y perspectivas. Objetivos: Este artículo es el resultado de la práctica en epidemiología ambiental y pretende justificar como este campo de aplicación de la epidemiología puede contribuir al desarrollo del pensamiento de esta disciplina. Conclusiones: Se sugieren 6 aspectos a desarrollar: enfocarse en las exposiciones, trabajar en equipos interdisciplinares, investigar las raíces sistémicas de los problemas y sus consecuencias, integrar la visión de las comunidades en las investigaciones, conectar los problemas a los procesos económicos y políticos relacionados, y hacer visibles los problemas de inequidad.
