| Abstract (English): | Introduction. In the last two decades there has been an exponential increase in the transplant of multiple organs, together with an increment in terms of the total number of successful organ grafts, and the quantity of centers that carry out organ transplantations.. Transplant success offers a viable alternative for patients who would have succumbed to multiple organ dysfunction in the past. Material and methods. Descriptive transversal study; 323 participants above 18-years of age, inhabitants of Durango's city metropolitan area took part in the study. A Personal Information registry form and a questionnaire comprised of 21 questions on organ donation and transplant knowledge were used. Results. Of the total 323 participants in the study 85% refer never to have been present or have taken part in talks on topics related to organ donation and transplant. Furthermore, it was observed that 64% of the studied population demonstrates to have general knowledge of concepts related to brain death. Conclusions. There is ignorance related to which they are the local institutions where organ procurement and transplants are performed. There is lack of knowledge on these topics mainly due to the lack of emphasis given to the promotion of informative talks organized by health institutions, mass media, educational institutions and labor centers. En los últimos dos decenios se ha dado un incremento exponencial en el trasplante de múltiples órganos, así como del número total de órganos injertados con éxito y de la cantidad de centros en que se realizan transplantes de órganos. El éxito del transplante ofrece una alternativa viable para pacientes que antes habrían sucumbido a disfunción orgánica múltiple. Material y métodos. Estudio descriptivo y transversal. Participaron 323 habitantes mayores de 18 años de la zona urbana de la ciudad de Durango. Se utilizó una Cédula de Datos Personales y un cuestionario de 21 preguntas de conocimientos sobre donación y trasplantes de órganos. Resultados. Del total de los 323 participantes en el estudio el 85% refiere nunca haber asistido a pláticas de temas relacionados con la donación de órganos y trasplantes. También se puede evidenciar que el 64% de la población estudiada manifiesta tener conocimientos, a grandes rasgos, de lo referente a muerte cerebral. Conclusiones. Hay desconocimiento de cuáles son las instituciones locales donde se realizan procuración y trasplantes de órganos. Hay falta de conocimiento de estos temas debido principalmente al poco énfasis en promover la participación de las personas en pláticas por parte de las instituciones de salud, medios de comunicación, instituciones educativas y centros laborales.
