Abstract (English): Temporomandibular joint is a synovial joint bicondylar type covered by fibrocartilage, in its smooth functioning, condylar process involved, temporal bone, muscle, joint capsule, disc, ligaments and synovial fluid. When the balance between these structures break starts the pathology, clinical manifestations of which can be installed in a gradual or sudden, affecting the quality of life and health of the individual. To establish the diagnosis and treatment plan is essential to clinical evaluation, together with radiographs and imaging methods, we must mention the panoramic radiograph, which evaluates the bone component of the maxillomandibular complex. This research proposes using this X-ray, display the morphological changes that compromise the body and mandibular condylar process in patients with temporomandibular dysfunction. To this end, we developed a descriptive study of a population of 50 patients treated at the Research Unit in Craniomandibular Disorders (UNICRAM), Faculty of Dentistry. University of Carabobo, Venezuela; morphological changes detected radiographically in 36% of patients with temporomandibular dysfunction. We conclude that the panoramic radiograph is a useful resource to study morphological changes in the mandible suggestive of Temporomandibular Dysfunction, which require more specific studies such as CT and MRI. Abstract (Spanish): La articulación Temporomandibular, es una articulación tipo diartrosis bicondílea recubierta por fibrocartílago, en su funcionamiento armónico, intervienen apófisis cóndilar, hueso temporal, músculos, cápsula articular, disco, ligamentos y líquido sinovial. Cuando el equilibrio entre dichas estructuras se rompe se inicia la patología, cuyas manifestaciones clínicas pueden ser de naturaleza gradual o instalarse súbitamente, afectando la calidad de vida y salud del individuo. Para establecer el diagnóstico y plan de tratamiento es fundamental la evaluación clínica, conjuntamente con las radiografías y los métodos de diagnóstico por imagen; cabe mencionar a la radiografía panorámica, que permite evaluar el componente óseo del complejo maxilomandibular. La presente investigación se propone exponer los cambios morfológicos mandibulares que comprometen cuerpo y apófisis condilar, en pacientes con disfunción Temporomandibular a través de la radiografía panorámica. A tal efecto, se desarrolló un estudio descriptivo en una población de 50 pacientes, atendidos en la Unidad de Investigación en Trastornos Craneomandibulares (UNICRAM), Facultad de Odontología. Universidad de Carabobo, Venezuela; detectándose radiográficamente cambios morfológicos en el 36 % de los pacientes con disfunción temporomandibular. Se concluye que la radiografía panorámica es un recurso inicial para estudiar cambios morfológicos en la mandíbula sugestivos de disfunción Temporomandibular, que requieren estudios más específicos, como la Tomografía Computarizada y Resonancia Magnética.
