| Abstract: | A year ago today, Indonesian soldiers gunned down more than 200 mourners at a funeral procession in East Timor. The massacre was nothing new in East Timor, a tiny southeast Asian country that Indonesia invaded in 1975 and annexed the following year. According to Amnesty International and local Catholic sources, one in every three Timorese has died under Indonesian rule. What made this particular atrocity different was the presence of several foreigners, who filmed the massacre at the Santa Cruz cemetery and spread eye-witness accounts of the unprovoked shootings around the world.
