| Abstract: | The Ransom Of Russian Art by John McPhee Macfarlane Walter & Ross, 181 pages, $29.95. In a world overrun with talkers, John McPhee is a listener. In January of 1993, a rumpled fellow with an extraordinary moustache sat next to him on an Amtrak train and got to talking. Over the distance of 200 miles, he uttered, McPhee estimates, 40,000 words. He spoke about how he managed to acquire 9,000 pieces of art by dissident Russian artists between 1956 and 1986. That's the genesis of The Ransom Of Russian Art, McPhee's 23rd book.
