Abstract: Those who pick up this book expecting a feel-good read with a flavoring of piety are in for a shock. At The Border Called Hope is the astonishing account of those among the world's 50 million refugees who have made their way to Canada, only to be baffled by an almost farcically inhuman immigration system that, operating apparently without checks or balances, has essentially spun out of control. In the early 1990s, Mary Jo Leddy, a political activist, journalist and Sister of Sion, took up a "temporary" position at Romero House, a government-subsidized settlement house for refugees located near the Junction in Toronto's west end.
