Abstract: In 1987, representatives of 55 countries gathered in Montreal to address an unprecedented planetary crisis. A manmade chemical chlorofluorocarbon (freon) was putting life itself at risk. The refrigerator coolant had once been heralded as a miracle invention, but it had become a doomsday menace as a result of the massive damage it was causing to the Earth's ozone layer. Even small amounts of freon is like a chemical hand grenade tearing through the wafer thin gas that protects us from the deadly radiation of the sun. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]
