| Abstract: | The ghosts of the 1980s walk among us. At least, that's how it feels in this dystopic post-pandemic world. An escalating Cold War. Fears of a nuclear meltdown in Ukraine. Inflation and labour resistance. The existential fear of planetary catastrophe. And South Africa, once the bastion of Apartheid has taken up the fight against 21st century modern apartheid in Gaza. Little wonder that when pundits look for comparable moments to make sense of these disorienting times, they are turning to events that happened 40 years ago. But it's not that the '80s have returned; the fact is, they never left. Nostalgia for the '80s is deeply rooted in our cultural imagination. For the longest time, the 1980s served as a cultural shorthand for a fun and inconsequential era - big hair, synth pop tunes, and parachute pants. In our mind's eye, the 1980s is like Hawkins, Indiana in the Netflix hit "Stranger Things," a curated landscape of colourful clothes, shopping malls, morning paper routes, and social cohesion. We cheer on young heroes who confront a dark "upside down" of Demogorgons and monsters threatening their middle-class town. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER] |
