| Abstract: | CHARLES DE HAES, who has died aged 87, was director-general of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF, now the World Wide Fund for Nature) from 1975 to 1993, working closely with the WWF's presidents, Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands, then Britain's Prince Philip, to build it into the world's largest conservation organisation, with programmes in more than 90 countries.
