Title: Youth and Development
Description: This new book reflects the keen interest of the Emirates Center for Strategic Studies and Research in publishing the activities and output of its 21st Annual Conference, which took place in March 2016. The book seeks to contribute by enhancing the constructive role of the younger generation and promoting their participation in implementing development goals in their respective countries. Considering the current challenges facing the region, it explains how young members of the community are ideally positioned to seize all available opportunities to consolidate economic growth, improve societies and ensure social stability. Over five chapters, the book's contributors discuss major issues relating to the youth and their role in the development process. Chapter One underlines the importance of political awareness, which serves as the basis for young people to assume responsibility and develop their own communities. Given the pivotal role of universities in building a knowledge-based society and achieving national development, Chapter Two discusses how the GCC's universities can help realize these goals and the challenges they face, with a special focus on the model of Sultan Qaboos University, Sultanate of Oman. Chapter Three explores ways to invest in digital media and social media tools to achieve youth development. The book reviews the role of agents of socialization and calls for a unified GCC strategy to adopt digital media and social media to achieve regional youth development, utilizing cultural, social and moral common grounds. Finally, Chapters Four and Five discuss the youth empowerment models employed in the Kingdom of Bahrain and Malaysia.
