The Changing Roles of the National Museum of Australia in Creating Australian Identity: How the Politics of a Nation Shaped its Culture

|---|---|
| Description: | This book demonstrates how a combination of shifts in the politics of multiculturalism and museological practices in Australia have led to tensions in the cultural representation of the National Museum of Australia (NMA). In an explanation that builds on interposing theories from Walter Benjamin and Slavoj Zizek, I argue that the NMA should be understood as part of displaced culture of multiculturalism that is removed from material relations, yet that it uses a cultural strategy of the dialectical image – creating tensions in museological representation of architectural space, multimedia and objects– to re-politicise itself, and cause fierce public reactions. |
