Abstract: The authors focus on ways to ensure that research on the genetic basis of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (TB) occurs in a timely way. Topics discussed include linking the elucidation of resistance mechanisms to the approval process for new antibiotics, resistance to bedaquiline and clofazimine, and minimizing the chance of developing less effective antibiotics. Also mentioned are concerns about patenting resistance mechanisms and the legality of patenting isolated genes in many nations.
