Abstract: A reprint is presented of the article "Persecution and the Art of Writing," by Leo Strauss, which appeared in volume 8, number 4 of the journal in November 1941. The article discusses the social impact that government persecution has on writing and authors throughout history from ancient Greece through the early 1940s, including in regard to their readership, truth and intelligence. The impact of political persecution on independent thought, including in regard to the persecution of philosophers, is discussed.
