Abstract: Coherence as one of the criteria for textuality is the main element of a well-produced text. In the literature, there are many studies on the classification of coherence relations. Although there are different classifications on coherence relations, similar findings are reported regarding the acquisition order of coherence relations in different languages. This study aimed to determine the acquisition order of coherence relations in Turkish by using one of the classifications on coherence relations (i.e. Rhetorical Structure Theory), and to compare this order with similar research. In data gathering, the 5th and 8th graders participated in the study were asked to produce texts based on a visual named Guernica by Picasso. There was a total of 46 texts (1437 sentences) gathered from the students. Then, texts from the 5th and 8th grade Turkish coursebooks were randomly selected. 46 texts (1437 sentences) gained from students and 14 texts (937 sentences) selected from Turkish coursebooks made up the whole database for this study. The compiled database was analysed on the basis of Rhetorical Structure Theory. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
