| Abstract: | The article focuses on the occurrence of intimate partner violence in rural areas in the United States. Little information is available on this subject as compared to data available on intimate partner violence in urban settings, which has been found to affect 3% to 5% of adult intimate relationships. The Conflict Tactics Scale is used in this study to measure the prevalence of severe physical abuse while Yllo's Controlling Behavior Questions are used for the measurement of controlling emotional abuse among a cohort of co-habiting couples in a rural Iowa county.
