Abstract: Parents and professionals who work with children wearing unilateral cochlear implants are faced with new challenges arising from recent research evidence on auditory deprivation and on binaural benefits for children who use a cochlear implant and a hearing aid in contralateral ears. Implementation of effective binaural/bimodal amplification for children requires an understanding of their hearing aid amplification needs and the factors affecting the success of device use. This paper identifies six major factors that affect successful use of a hearing aid with a cochlear implant through case studies, and discusses the strategies that can be used to address each of these factors. Guidelines for managing binaural/bimodal amplification for children are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
