Abstract: The author who is a editor of the "Journal of Traumatic Stress" (JTS), has given a great deal of thought to how well the JTS is doing. Ultimately, a journal is successful if it publishes high quality work that people know about and use to influence science, practice, and policy. Determining whether a journal has this type of impact is difficult and takes time, so he cannot yet tell how successful JTS is using this ultimate criterion for success. There are several other criteria that are often used to evaluate journals. These include circulation, the number of manuscript submissions, the rigor of the peer review process as reflected by acceptance rates, and the quality of published articles. In this note, the author will give his perspective about how well JTS is doing when evaluated using these criteria. With respect to circulation, number of manuscript submissions, rigor of the review process, and quality of published articles, JTS is doing quite well. At a time when the number of new journals that focus on some aspect of traumatic stress is expanding and many existing journals have declining circulation, JTS has increased its U.S. institutional subscriptions from 312 in 1999 to 327 in 2000.
