Abstract: This paper focuses on the issues affecting diagnosis and treatment of depression. The associations between depression and comorbid medical conditions are complex and incompletely understood. However, the healthcare provider should be aware of the intimate association between depression and comorbid medical illness. Some of the major types of medical illnesses known to be associated, or influenced by, comorbid depression are: coronary artery disease; diabetes; chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and asthma; Parkinson's disease; migraine headaches; rheumatoid arthritis; HIV/AIDS; and cancer. Other relevant factors include evidence of: a previous episode of depression; depression among first-degree relatives; previous suicide attempts; postpartum stress; poor social support; negative life events; alcohol or substance abuse; involvement in domestic violence; and risk-taking behaviors in adolescents.
